COMMERCIAL SPOTLIGHT: Kate & Company

Recently named one of the best wedding planners in the country by Vogue magazine, Kate & Co. is obviously skyrocketing to the top of its industry. Kate Turner, the “Kate” in Kate & Co. is the creative genius who has led her team to wedding planning excellence. It’s no wonder that Kate & Co.’s offices and design studio is a picture of excellence as well.

Savvy was honored to be asked to design their headquarters, which is located in a darling home in Kirkwood. The result of a complete gut overhaul is nothing less than extraordinary. Here’s a tour and an interview with Kate!  (all photos by Michael Jacob)

Why did you decide to renovate a Kirkwood home for your offices?

We wanted to have a homey feel to our offices and make sure our clients felt that Kate & Company is truly a family space.

How did you find the house, and what was the renovation like?

Kirkwood is a central location, perfect for our clients. The renovation was not without its stresses, that’s for sure! We had to take the whole house down to the studs, and the construction was 24/7.

What were your most important priorities when designing your working spaces?

Our most important priority was to have collective work spaces for our employees. A unique conference and client meeting space was of the utmost importance, as we are constantly having client design meetings. We also wanted to make sure our clients felt at home and were comfortable. It was important that our personal branding and style was reflected in the furnishings and accessories in our offices.

The spacious conference room area features a stunning glass topped table with a faux tree stump base surrounded by five Ghost chairs, which add an airy feeling to the room and take up less visible space. Special touches, such as the contemporary chandelier and art deco chest are a nod to the modern, yet timeless point of view that Kate & Co. embraces. Invitations from the dozens of weddings that Kate & Co. have planned hang across the window as a unique art piece.

What were your top design goals, and were there any challenges achieving those goals?

Our top design goals were to have a well-styled and timeless space. The challenge was choosing pieces that were usable, but also beautiful.

One of the office spaces is dressed in neutrals with a fabulous faux wood floor in a wider plank. The glass topped desks again add visual space, and the white bases add style. White leather and chrome task chairs are functional and pretty, and armless upholstered chairs for clients and guests are comfy, yet very beautiful and classic in shape. The pop of blues in the striped pillows and Greek Key window panels add subtle interest. Opting for open shelving instead of cabinetry also expands the space visually making the room feel and work larger.

Kate’s office is a study in how elements of a commercial space can overlap seamlessly to a residential application. Wouldn’t this be an awesome home office?! As the owner and principal designer at this busy wedding planning company, Kate chose to cover an entire wall in front of her desk with chalkboard paint to help keep her organized and on task. A soft blue wraps the rest of the office in calm, and shimmering window panels in a similar hue enhance without distracting. Creamy upholstered chairs in a romantic, rounded silhouette and accented with brass nailhead trim are comfortable for clients and fit the style and feel of this office perfectly. A contemporary glass topped desk with chrome legs is a great foil for the otherwise softer elements in the room. Pops of black in the art deco inspired credenza and gorgeous oversized floral painting ground the space and add punch. And what about those baskets on the wall? What a great storage solution when a furniture piece would have been too much.

What are some of your favorite design elements in your offices?

The breakfast bar in the front room is definitely a favorite design element. It allows us to have a functional space and a pretty one! The sliding glass doors between spaces also allows us to feel open and able to move, while still creating the divided spaces we need.

Floating metal shelves are the ideal way to display wedding day inspiration and become unique “artwork” above a sleek and contemporary breakfast bar. A round table is always ready with table setting ideas and allow the Kate & Co. team to showcase their tabletop designs for clients. Soft roman shades in a creamy fabric offer just the right amount of style and privacy. A contemporary lighting fixture adds interest above.

How did you end up starting Kate & Co.?

My love for event planning led to the formation of Kate & Co. nearly four years ago. I had been part of another wedding planning company, but I wanted to have my specific style and brand represented in the market.

What’s the hardest business lesson you had to learn?

Definitely learning to say ‘no’ – even when it’s a tough thing to do!

What are your top 3 tips for staying organizing and in charge of a growing business?

*Make a to-do list!

*Keep a schedule – your days off are your days off!

*Calendars are a lifesaver!

What’s a typical day like for you?

A typical day includes hanging out in the morning with my two puppies and my husband, Adam. From there, I head into the Kate & Company offices, work on design concepts for clients, answer a stream of emails and end my day with a great margarita at my favorite happy hour spot.

What’s the best part of owning your business?

The best part by far is getting the opportunity to work with some of the best ladies in the biz! My team is my backbone.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

Being named one of the best wedding planners in the country by Vogue magazine this past year!
