As designers, we have been influenced by many people. But, we are continually inspired by the great Southern architect, Bobby McAlpine. Here is an excerpt from his latest book,
The Home Within Us.
"Home is a powerful means for healing. Designed correctly, the home is a very still and quiet place. When the math is gorgeous and perfect, it is at rest - and your potential to come to rest will follow...
Not as simple as symmetry and decoration, good architecture [and design] requires whole vision, expert timing, and sensitive placement. Rhythm and repetition, the question and answer of sequence, the clear-eyed invitation of good alignment - these are balm to any animal. The integrity of beautiful math is an elixir of spirit and place...
Such houses have unique and personal disciplines that elevate you, holding you up to your own possibility. As much mirror as prescription, they are commissioned with the powers to soothe and to inspire. Like a good parent, their agenda is to draw your life forward with embraces and kisses and moments of great expansion that deliver you safely into the world. Always responsive and receptive, good math is another way a house says, 'I love you.'" - McAlpine pg. 9-10
Today, we honor all those mothers, grandmothers, aunts and women in our lives who have helped shape the "home within us."
Happy Mother Mother's Day!
